Symptoms



After deploying a sysprepped Windows 7 image you may see the following error message
** Failure occured during online installation**

If you review the Windows\panther\unattendgc\setuperr.log you may see the following entries

2009-12-11 10:22:57, Error [windeploy.exe] Failure occured during online installation. Online installation cannot complete at this time.; hr = 0x8007139f

If you review the windows\panther\unattendgc\setupact.log you may see the following entries

2009-12-11 10:22:57, Info [windeploy.exe] WinDeploy.exe launched with command-line []…
2009-12-11 10:22:57, Info [windeploy.exe] Setup has not completed, adding pending reboot.
2009-12-11 10:22:57, Warning [windeploy.exe] SetupCl has pending operations; blocking deployment process until they've been completed.
2009-12-11 10:22:57, Error [windeploy.exe] Failure occured during online installation. Online installation cannot complete at this time.; hr = 0x8007139f



Cause


Response from Microsoft:
The installation is linked with registry keys that appear to cause problems for sysprep.
· The system doesn't have full access to some registry key.
· A registry key is larger than 8kb.
· Registry is corrupted in some way

Some possible causes are

Installation of HP LasterJet 8150 driver which creates the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Providers\Client Side Rendering Print Provider\<sid string here>\Printers\Connections\<name of the printer type, location, etc.>!RemotePrinterCache

Installation of 3rd party program that created and or modified the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\00002109110000000000000000F01FEC\Features!VSTAIDEFiles

Installation of Daemon Tools created following registry key with incorrect permissions(Administrators and system did not have Full Control)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\sptd\Cfg

Installation of Lotus Notes or Lotus Communicator created the following registry key that was bigger than 8k
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\test\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-21-1928666829-3700675070-3932613355-500\Products\BF554AA4EEFBC374AAE0F4AD05F5F67B\Features!Sametime




Resolution


Response from Microsoft:
To resolve this issue you must determine what registry key is causing the issue and then uninstall the application to remove the key or correct the permissions of the registry key.

This can be done by uninstalling software in groups to narrow down which application or driver is creating the registry key.
